Dr. Yevgeny (Eugene) Botanov received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Kansas, completed a predoctoral internship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and specialized in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington with Dr. Marsha Linehan, the developer of DBT.
Dr. Botanov aims to apply the most up-to-date science to provide compassionate and evidence-based treatments to those in need. He specializes in DBT and, more broadly, behavior therapy. In his psychotherapy practice, his aim is to help people overcome the difficulties and barriers in their life while offering them practical skills and psychoeducation to attain their goals and experience a life worth living. Additionally, he takes an active, problem-solving approach to therapy and concentrates on changing behavior, especially lifestyle habits. Altogether, he uses evidence-based interventions tailored and applied to everyone he works with and values creating a safe, welcoming, and affirming therapeutic environment. Dr. Botanov has worked with adolescents, adults, and individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
Dr. Botanov has spent over a decade in academia teaching undergraduate and graduate students and training future mental health providers while being active in clinical research. His research interests explore effective and efficacious interventions for depression and suicide. Specifically, he is interested in what interventions work and how well they work to treat depression and reduce suicide. Additionally, he is interested in clinical science literacy, especially how the (mis)understanding of science affects clinical practice. Dr. Botanov has published in peer reviewed publications such as Behavior Therapy, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, and Nature Reviews: Psychology. He is an editorial board member for Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. Additionally, Dr. Botanov is a Board member of the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (ISITDBT) and the Co-Chair of the 2026 annual conference.
In his free time, Dr. Botanov enjoys spending time with his family, especially cooking for them. Additionally, he enjoys art, film and exploring new places and experiences both locally and globally.
