Lauren L. Barris, LCSW-C, is a licensed clinical social worker. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan with degrees in Psychology and Spanish. She went on to earn her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan School of Social Work, where she completed internships working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and providing solution-focused therapy to students presenting with a wide range of mood, anxiety, and adjustment-related disorders. During her graduate education, Lauren gained an introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and has since centered her clinical practice around this modality due to its clinical efficacy, straightforward approach, and emphasis on transparency and respect between clinician and client.
Lauren has several years of experience as both an individual and group therapist providing DBT to chronically suicidal clients struggling with personality and mood disorders. Lauren has also spent time working as a Clinical Social Worker at the University of Michigan Hospital, where she provided psychosocial support to patients living with Cystic Fibrosis and other chronic and terminal illnesses. Here, Lauren gained particular experience with issues pertaining to adjustment, distress tolerance, reality acceptance, co-morbid conditions, end of life, grief and loss, and chronic pain. Lauren is trained in the evidence-based provision of DBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing. She specializes in the use of DBT and Mindfulness practice to support clients struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and difficulty with emotion regulation and interpersonal relationships.
